"With a lack of artifice, D.C. has written and sings the lyrics about the challenges of successful couplehood in the serious "Sad Man" and "Hard This Goodbye." On a lighter note, cupcakes with sprinkles are sprinkled into a mix of childhood memories in "Sandy Lysaght's Ma." Reflections on grief and loss make this a more downbeat collection than is typical of D.C.'s work, but his funnybone is not entirely absent..
"Hello Nancy, Goodbye Ron" is a genuinely touching song about his reaction to the death of President Reagan, as D.C. found himself responding to the humanity and history beyond the politics. Like the songs here about the loss of his mother, it's cathartic but with restraint and craft. Wisely, he ends the CD on a strong note of hope with "Fixed Up Heart" wherein he exults, "Found a way out of my sadness/ Found a path that leads to start... In his light and quirky songs, his observations and wit are both sharp. He imagines what a baby might be thinking as his paternity is determined thanks to DNA and the producers of tabloid TV in "Maury"; it's clever and funny, but also has an underlying social commentary. There's a theatricality in the way he sets up and sings his story-songs...D.C. Anderson's voice is one that's pleasing in his role as a singer and thought-provoking in his role as lyricist." — Rob Lester Talkin' Broadway.com 9/14/06
"The title track from D.C. Anderson’s latest release starts on a somber note. Just piano and his made-for-musical-theater voice singing of “thistles where there once was grass.” But listen for a moment and hear the acoustic guitar add delicate touches as Anderson fleshes out a story of an abandoned hotel—from the hotel’s point of view. The unusual perspective coupled with the sonic sparseness of the song proves quite refreshing.
The rest of the album offers equal parts comedy and drama. From the hilarious “Jury Duty Girlfriend” (“How long can she resist? I’m the only guy who’s single, let’s turn this trial into a tryst”) to the moving “Sad Man,” written after the death of his mother, Anderson paints pictures that you’ll want to keep hanging in your mind. "— Mare Wakefield Performing Songwriter Magazine November 2006 issue
A balladeer and folk singer as well as actor and writer, D.C. Anderson’s work embodies the best of the coffee-shop 1960s with a healthy dose of contemporary angst thrown in for good measure. Eccentric without being inaccessible and heartfelt without being pretentious, Anderson’s lyrics have made him a favorite for years and I Am Still, his most recent release, will only enhance that popularity.
Anderson has a lovely voice that soars with throbbing intensity. On ballads, like the haunting Madison Laughs with music by Roy Zimmerman, his gentle, whispering delivery will bring a lump to your throat, while on silly ditties like Jury Duty Girlfriend, a delicious ode to jury-duty-infatuation written in collaboration with Ritt Henn, his natural flair for the comedic and absurd comes shining through. Many songs on I Am Still are reflections on, and meditations about, the loss of his mother and Anderson’s delivery rings with an authenticity that’s piercing in its sadness.
If you haven’t discovered D.C. Anderson, I Am Still is an excellent place to start. — David Hurst, Cabaret Scenes Magazine March 2007

Ballad

Listen and Order
"D.C.
Anderson gives the cabaret genre a good kick in the pants. Several
of these 11 original songs sound like unearthed classics from the
Great American Songbook ("I Don't Know My Way Around a Dream").
Anderson can emote with the best but does so sparingly, balancing
the drama with Tom Lehrer-style humor." -- Mark Davis,
The Advocate
Although there are some clever lyrics, BALLAD reveals the quieter
side of this prolific word-weaver. There's a lot of gold here --
listen closely." -- Stu Hamstra, Cabaret Hotline

I
have said it before and I'll say it again: D.C. Anderson is one
of cabaret's most eclectic of performers. Currently touring in The
Phantom of Opera as Andre, he displays the prerequisite brassy Broadway
voice when the need requires, but also possesses a subtle and supple
voice that caresses the listener with its warmth and simplicity.
While he is best known for his sly and wry way with a comic number,
his latest CD, Ballad, displays a side of Anderson that has been
on ever-increasing display. As the title implies, Ballad largely
consists of songs that deal with love, be it found, lost, or sought
after. The revelation of the album is that all the songs contain
lyrics written by Anderson.
Even
though this is a more serious album than his previous CDs, his sense
of humor continues to percolate throughout, with a few of the cuts
being full-fledged comic numbers ("Chocolate is Fine," which divulges
clinical reasons why we love the stuff, and "Human Fondue," which
gives a warning about using said substance in an erotic manner).
Other highlights include "If You Touch Me" (music by Roy Zimmerman),
a love song that is refreshing and effective in its simplicity,
and the bittersweet "Leave You Now" (music by Carol Hall). --

review from Don Heckman, The Los Angeles Times:
"D.C. Anderson
has a voice that seems adaptable to every purpose. His BLUE SUMMER
DAY manages to put him in every imaginable musical circumstance.
He has an affection for songs filled with off-beat humor and rich
irony. Anderson can sing a standard such as Second Time Around
with storytelling mastery and he can deliver new material with
the sort of musical understanding that is a delight to songwriters.
With 32 tracks, all of them engaging in one way or another, this
is a marvelous way to meet one of cabaret's compelling performers."

A
CD Pick of the Week from Cabaret
Hotline! Here's their review:
I always enjoy those special times of the
year when D. C. Anderson comes to New York and I can once again
enjoy his sweet, smooth vocals, his delightful songs, and his very
droll cabaret personae. D.C. always seems to have a few songs in
his show that make me laugh out loud - and a few that touch my heart.
His latest CD, "The Box Under The Bed" is a collection
of D.C.'s favorites, and many of them are my favorites as well.
With the very talented Lem Jay Ignacio at the piano, the arrangements
are simple yet eloquent, never distracting from the songs.
There are a full 23 tracks on this CD - a measure of how difficult
it must have been for Mr. Anderson to make his final selection of
favorites for this recording. Only of a few of the 23 could possibly
be called "standards." Many of them recall images of an
era past - flower children, folk music, and a time less hurried.
Some of the more lilting tunes will have you trying to sing along,
even though you don't know the words! |
